Simple pleasures

Will our holidays suit your family?

We don’t have luxury air conditioned cabins with en-suite showers and hot running water. We don’t have large inflatable Flamingos to float on whilst sipping cocktails. We don’t have microwave, espresso machine, ice maker, freezer or even electric flush toilets. And we definitely don’t have super-fast Wi-Fi. You guessed it....our holidays are for cavemen and their families.

Are we completely mad? Probably!

We actually chose this simple life, we looked to buy a wooden boat rather than a modern plastic one. Our choice meant a more complicated boat to sail, which is slower, has less space, is constant work to maintain and for the same money we could have bought a much newer boat with easier maintenance.

So why make that choice?

We sold a beautiful self-renovated farmhouse in France and wanted to have a similar ambience and just as much of a home on the water. To us a modern boat would feel like a sterile floating apartment. Though buying a modern boat would mean easier resale and better performance (in certain conditions) we went against all “sensible” advice and bought a boat with our hearts.

We have friends on wooden boats and love the warm cosy feeling of the traditional interior. These boats feel like real marine homes and give the ambience we sought after. Joining our friends David, Hazel and their two children onboard their converted fishing boat Ros Alither was the deciding factor.

Once we’d seen the huge solid Oak timbers we were no longer concerned about the strength of wooden boats, instead we were in love and had to own one. Marie Des Isles is not a true wooden boat in the traditional sense, she is epoxy sheathed, for our introduction to wooden boat maintenance she was a perfect place to start.

We had to own a beautiful wooden boat and become a part of this smaller friendly sub culture of sailing. Every time we arrive at a new anchorage we make new friends because of the attention Marie des isles attracts. She's who we are and who we want to be. Sharing this life with our guests is priceless.  If you're interested in joining us please drop us a line and let's build a week to remember.
